But it wasn't always this way. Hargreaves Hill Brewing Co. began brewing in 2004, in a little green shed on Hargreaves Road, in Steels Creek, just below the hill named by the locals ‘Hargreaves Hill.’ Simon Walkenhorst, and his wife, Beth Williams began the brewery together, with a thirst for more choice and quality in the Australian beer market. The original brewery was small, with a brewlength of only 400 litres, and every stage of brewing and packaging was by hand.
In 2009 the brewery was destroyed, along with much of Steels Creek in the Black Saturday fires, which also decimated Kinglake and Marysville. The brewery made the decision to forge ahead, and with the support of many in the Victorian brewing industry, managed to keep some products on the market by brewing in other breweries for six months, until a new brewhouse was established on Beresford Road, in Lilydale’s Cavehill Industrial Estate. Since that time, Hargreaves Hill has consolidated packaging and brewing facilities in the new brewhouse in Lilydale, and has begun national distribution across Australia.
Although we arent open to the public all the time, we do conduct brewery tours, have open nights and special events in our beloved space. Check in on the socials for updates of upcoming events or get in touch here
