Hargreaves Hill Restaurant, Yarra Glen,Victoria, AustraliaBrewery News

Lots of hard work, sweat, groaning of orgers, and hissing of fermenters has been taking place in Cave Hill Industrial Estate, and has produced some great beers in the last few months. Our much loved Abbey Dubbel is out on tap, and has the fans screaming for more, and large bottles of it…..which just might be possible as the year turns cooler. A new batch of the Bohemian Pilsener, released as an unfiltered Kellerbier across Melbourne on tap has found a new audience with its crisp finish, grassiness and creamy mouthfeel, look out for it at the Terminus in Clifton Hill, the Royston, the Taphouse in St Kilda and Darlinghurst, Sydney, also at The Courthouse in North Melbourne. Simon has been working around the clock on the new packaging which hit stores last week, with a new shaped carton and six packs to match.

Foodies Night

On Monday nights in Yarra Glen, Foodies Night is going strong, devoted to the food and wine industry of the Yarra. Each week we match an interesting international or Australian wine with an iconic peasant dish, and all are welcome, food and a glass of wine included are $25. In addition, we encourage local wineries or food producers give tastings and discussions regarding their products, experiences, or new releases. On May 10, international wine importer Marcus Gniel of Ce Soir Wines will be presenting a chat about his years in Bordeaux, and putting on tasting some wines from the region, the dish on offer will be Coq au vin, with a glass of mystery wine.

In the Bar

Timo Mayer’s Bloody Hill Chardonnay, Big Betty Shiraz, and his delicious Dr Mayer Riesling, are standouts on the winelist this autumn, also the Maddens Rise Pinot, and Cabernet Sauvignon made by the impressive Luke Lambert. Mac Forbes’ Moorish Yarra Valley Pinot Noir is still lingering with us, winning hearts, and we also feature a Chardonnay, Rose, and iconic Port, from Graeme Miller Wines, and some great wines from Warramate, Phillip Lobley and Whispering Hills.

Dining

Our cool climate menu is being well received, with some great new dishes including Chilli mussels, Salt and Pepper squid, Pumpkin and goats curd tart, and a delicious potato and leek soup, finished with porcini and truffle oil in the entrée section. Main courses include an unforgettable porterhouse steak with 3 mushrooms, slow braised lamb shoulder with handmade potato gnocchi and salsa verde, Asian style sticky pork belly with steamed greens, and of course Chris’ delicious daily fish specials. We now have even more dining space available upstairs, so don’t forget to ask if you’d like a private dining room. Wednesday is now ‘Pub Classic’ night, come and check out our take on classic pub style meals including Fish and Chips, Porterhouse with French Fries, Bangers and Mash, Slow braised beef pie, and World’s best Parma, great value and quality. Bring a copy of your Hargreaves Hill newsletter to receive a free pot!

Glenn and Simon have already released some delicious Pale Ale, and Hefeweizen, and the word is that there will be several new products available in bottles and kegs over the next few weeks. The first batch produced in the brewery, the Batch 1 Scotch Ale has been completely consumed, and the first batches of Celtic and Bohemian Pilsener are being released in kegs.

Since February’s fires, there have been many developments. The need to create a new brewery has given us the impetus to move site, increase the volume that we produce, and improve our brewing and packing systems. A new brewing plant was purchased from Beechworth, and has been installed in Factory No 60, Beresford Road, Lilydale, which will become the new brewing headquarters. Simon and Glenn in the brewery have been working around the clock to put the plant together, and will hopefully have the system up and running by the start of July. We have also purchased a bottling line, and a labelling machine, all great news to those of us who have brewed, hand packed and labelled the beer at Hargreaves Hill over the last five years. We will also have equipment capable of making lagers, and other new specialty beers, which will ensure that we are able to keep thirsty beer lovers happy for a long time to come. A huge thanks to all those breweries, and benefactors who have offered brew time, or financial support, and through their generosity have kept Hargreaves Hill alive.
